The Australasian Universities Language and Literature Association was founded in 1953, along the lines of the Modern Language Association of America, to foster the study at a local level of the languages and literatures of the ancient and modern world. Moving with the times, the interests of members have also developed in the directions of linguistics, cultural studies, drama, film, and literary theory. The Association holds a conference every other year in either Australia or New Zealand and publishes a journal, AUMLA.

Annual membership of the Association costs $AUD 60 for individuals and $AUD 70 for institutions. Members of the Association receive the two print issues of the journal published in the year of subscription.
